Sustainable development

Consorzio Cuoio

The Tanneries associated with the Consorzio Vero Cuoio Italiano are part of a virtuous sector, who abiding by strict rules have invested in the adoption of sustainable environmental and social policies, involving all the stakeholders of the tuscan leather district. Their commitment is addressed in particular to the strict application of the national and International laws regulating this sector, to the correct management of chemicals in the different phases of production, to the traceability of the product, to the wellbeing of the animals in the supplier countries.

raw material

The raw hides used for the production of the sole leather are themselves a sustainable material, a food industry waste, otherwise destined to be disposed of. It is, in other words, a renewable byproduct that the tanning industry recovers and transforms into a high value added product.

wastwater treatment

The Consortium Tanneries work hard to reduce the use of ground water in favor of a better way of using waste water. For this purpose, before being released into the environment, the waste water is sent to filtering and purification plants.

recycling of solid waste

A large part of the solid waste comes from the various mechanical processes, others from the treatment of the tanneries waste water which generates sludge. The recovery and recycling of this waste is part of the Consortium’s commitment to a sustainable production.

energy consumption

The tanning industry uses electricity mainly as power for the plant and the machineries. The thermal energy instead is used primarily to heat the water used for the tanning process and to heat the working plants.
A more and more responsible use of these resources is accompanied by the steady rise in use of renewable energy by the Consortium Tanneries.
